Wood Band Saw Blades 101: 7 Important Terms Explained

Selecting the right band saw blade starts with understanding what the specs actually mean. Here's a breakdown of the seven terms that matter most.

1. Width The distance from the tooth tip to the back of the blade. A narrower blade is more flexible and handles tighter curves. A wider blade offers more stability for straight cuts.

2. Thickness (Gauge) The thickness of the blade body. A thicker blade handles more pressure and holds up better in heavy-duty applications.

3. Tooth Spacing The distance between tooth tips. Spacing affects how the blade handles different log sizes and wood densities — get this wrong and you'll feel it in your cut quality and blade life.

4. Rake Angle (Hook Angle) The number of degrees the tooth face leans forward of 90°. This determines how aggressively the blade removes wood.

  • 10° — All-purpose cutting, mixed or softer hardwoods, smaller logs, narrow cuts
  • — Frozen, tropical, or extreme hardwoods, wider cuts, higher horsepower saws
  • — Frozen or extreme hardwoods, all horsepower saws

5. Pitch The number of teeth per inch. Higher pitch means more teeth, smoother cut. Lower pitch means fewer teeth, faster cut.

6. Gullet & Tooth Height The gullet is the rounded area between teeth that captures and clears sawdust. Tooth height is measured from the bottom of the gullet to the tip of the tooth — it affects how much material the blade can remove per pass.

7. Tooth Set How far each tooth is bent beyond the blade body. Set determines kerf width — the amount of material removed with each pass. Kerf = blade width + twice the set.
